The Edinburg Senior Housing
The City of Lawrenceburg, Indiana needed high quality housing for its senior citizens, and a piece of architecture to transition from a large casino complex to a single family detached neighborhood. Jeff Raser’s design team not only met the needs of the program of spaces, but also faced the challenge of the conflicting urban context.
The Edinburg is a three-story building composed of two stories of apartments over a one-story parking level and gathering facilities. The design team created a building and outdoor spaces that met three primary goals of the client:
maximize the quantity of natural light for each unit
create high quality indoor and outdoor living spaces for each unit and for the entire building
create a building to transition from a large scale parking garage / casino complex to a residential neighborhood
To achieve these goals, we arranged the building in a U-shape around a lush, active courtyard. We designed the building to have many ins and outs, creating corners and framed views for each unit. This configuration frames the primary views from the apartments to be towards the courtyard and adjacent residential neighborhood and away from a 5-story parking garage across the street.
